Ch 1 - 5

Chapter 1 - Jem and Dill seem to have a competitive spirit. Why do you think this is?

Chapter 2 - Scout is able to read very well and this is only her first day of school. However, Miss Caroline isn't very happy about this? Why do you think this is?

Chapter 3 - Jem invites Walter Cunningham over for lunch. Why does he do this and why does Calpurnia get so upset with Scout during the meal?

Chapter 4 - In this chapter Scout begins to discover tiny gifts being left behind inside a knot hole in a tree that belongs to the Radley's. Do you think these things are for Scout and if so, who is leaving them in the hole?

Chapter 5 - Do you have any thoughts as to who Boo Radley is and why he doesn't like to come out of his house?

I think the reason that miss caraline dislikes the fact that scout can read is because he is black. I also bilieve that she is upset because he has been tought to read with a different curiculume than her's.

Remember, Scout is white. Miss Caroline is probably confused with Scout's ability to read and may even feel like Scout is just too much for her to handle. Miss Caroline is the teacher and she wants to teach her students to read to feel successful in her job.

Evan,

You bring up the issue of race, sometimes people do get treated differently because of the color of thier skin. However, this was a bit different.

I think Miss Caroline is angry with Scout because she could read. Miss Caroline feels threatened by Scout's knowledge.
