Chapters 1-5

Chapter 1
On page 11, Scout described Mr. Radley as "...a thin leathery man with colorless eyes, so colorless they did not reflect light. His cheekbones were sharp and his mouth was wide, with a thin upper lip and a full lower lip."
How does this description of Mr. Radley help you visualize him as a character? What sort of character do you think he is based on this description? Try to draw a picture of him.

Chapter 2
On pages 20-22, Scout tries to help Walter Cunningham by explaining his situation to Miss Caroline. However, Miss Caroline disciplines Scout for it. Do you feel that Scout deserved to get hit on the hand with a ruler? Why or why not?

Chapter 3
On pages 27 and 28, Miss Caroline has another confrontation with a boy in the class. This time it is with Burris Ewell. Burris says somethings that make her cry. Do you think Burris had the right to say those things to her? Why or why not? Could he have handled the situation in a different way? What else could he have said? How would you have handled the situation if you were Burris?

Chapter 4
Scout found two pieces of gum in the tree by the Radley house. She choose to put them in her mouth and chew them. If you were Scout, what would you have done?

Chapter 5
Jem, Dill, and Scout made a fishing pole to try and put a note in the window of the Radley house for Boo. What else could they have tried to make to get the note in the window?

With this description of Mr.Radley I would picture him as someone who is old, sad, and lonely.I also would guess that something happend to him like a death of someone or another bad event that would make him look this way.I think Mr.Radley is a complex character and has a secret of his past that he is not telling people.

I think that the description of Mr. Radley on page 11 does give you more than just a mental image of his appearance. It makes me picture his personality as well. According to the passage, he seems like an unemotional, somewhat harsh humorless man. While he does seem to retain these qualities, this portrayal also makes him sound tired and worn. This is the personality I image of Mr. Radley.

I agree with the fact that Mr. Radley is old, sad, and lonely. I also think that something horrible has happened to him. I hope that we find out his secret.

I like how you were able to describe what you think his personality would be like based on his appearance. I wonder what he has experienced in his life that has made him so tired and worn.

Chapter One: With this description of Mr.Radley, I would first think of him as a very mysterious person. Because of this, people are probably quick to judge him, making him not liked by many people. Although this description, like Maggie said, may describe his personality, I believe, it might be a false description. Since people a quick to judge him because of his appearence, they might be wrong about his personality. He may end up being quiet, but perhaps very kind.

I feel that Scout did not deserve to get hit on the hand with a ruler, which was her punishment for trying to explain to Miss Caroline why Walter did not accept her money for lunch. She was only trying to help the situation, after all she is only a first grader, she tried her personal best to explain this to her. Although Scout might have said it wrong, and it might have gotten a bit too personal, Miss Caroline had no right to hit her because Scout was trying to stop an embarrassing moment for not only Walter Cunningham, but Miss Caroline as well. Scout was only trying to help, and Miss Caroline should not have hit her on the hand with a ruler.

I think that Scout,Jem, and Dill could of used many different sorces to get the note into the window of Mr. Radley's home. One idea I had was to use a sling shot. I would of wrote a note asking if he would like to go to ice cream with us and then shoot it into the window of his house. If this did not work I would of tied it to a marble or small rock and toss it into the window. That way if I threw the note, it wouldn't cause any damage. Those are two ideas I had for getting the note into Mr.Radley's window.

I feel Scout did not deserve to get her hand slapped by a ruler. After all she was only trying to explain to her teacher why Walter did not except the money from her. Scout was only trying to help the situation they were in. She really is only a first grader and she tried to explain it as best as she could. Even if she did get a little into the life of Walter, Miss Caroline had no right to hit her with that ruler because she was only trying to help.
