Chapter 11
On page 112 Atticus says to Jem,
"I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand."
What do you think real courage is? Why?
Chapter 12
Why do you think Scout wants to spend time with Cal at her house?
Chapter 13
One page 134 Atticus says,
"Don't worry about anything. It's not time to worry."
What do you think Atticus is talking about?
Chapter 14
Dill ran away from his home. He said that his family didn't need him. Why do you think he feels this way? Have you ever felt like this?
Chapter 15
Atticus did not yell at Jem when they were getting ready to leave the jail. Instead he showed him a sign of affection. Why do you think he reacted this way to Jem disobeying him?

Ch 15
Atticus realized that Jem had grown up a lot and was very glad to see that he cared so much about him to stand up and disobey him in a dangerous situation. He was grateful rather than mad that he was so loved and cared for.
Kate--I agree that Atticus was happy that Jem cared so much about him that he would stand up for him in a dangerous situation.
Ch.12- I think that Scout wants to spend more time with Calpurnia at her house mostly because Jem is older now and does not want to be around Scout because she is younger and is a girl. Scout doesn’t seem to play with other kids, so Calpurnia is her only other companion. Cal always makes Scout feel needed and since Scout is growing older as well, Cal is her only feminine influence. Cal is almost like a mother figure to Scout.
"I wanted you to see what real courage is... It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what" -Atticus (Lee, 112)
Real courage is when you commit to doing something even when you know that most times, you will not succeed. A man holding a gun does not show the same type of courage as the kind Mrs. Dubose displayed because you enter the situation with hardly any risk of being defeated. The strongest type of courage is when you know you're going to lose the battle but you follow through because you know that sometimes you do win.
