Chapters 6-10

Chapter 6
If Scout, Jem and Dill were so fascinated with the Radleys all this time, why do you think they waited until Dill's last day in Maycomb to look through the shutter?
Chapter 7
Scout says she "tried to climb into Jem's skin and walk around in it." Have you ever been advised to do the same? If so, how did you handle the situation? Did it help you better understand? Did it help Scout better understand?
Chapter 8
What did the people of Maycomb blame for the drastic change in weather? How did that make Scout and Jem feel?
Chapter 9
Scout often finds herself "fighting" to defend her father. Have you ever had to defend someone close to you? How did you handle it? Do you think Scout handled it appropriately? If not, what could she have done differently?
Chapter 10
Scout and Jem seemed to be disappointed with Atticus. What changed their minds? How did they see their father after that?

The people of Maycomb blamed the drastic weather on the kids that disobey their parents or smoke cigarettes. Jem and Scout felt, “burdened with the guilt of contributing to the aberrations of nature.” Therefore they were feeling responsible for the “unhappiness of our neighbors and the discomfort of ourselves.”

You're right, Kaitlin...the people of Maycomb did blame those types of children. Why, though, do you think they placed so much of the blame on Scout and Jem? How do you know that the children felt discomfort?

Scout and Jem are disapointed in their father because he is old. He can't do as much as other fathers can do. He can't play football with Jem while other dads can play football with their sons. Scout thinks that he can't do anything. Other kids in her class talk about all the things their dads can do. Scout has nothing to brag about, so she tells Cal that she thinks he can't do anything. By the end Tim Johnson is mad and the sherrif needs to shoot him but if he misses he will hit the Radley's. So Atticus is told to make the shot and he hits the dog perfecty. Now Scout has something to be proud of from Atticus.
