Chapter 27: Three major events took place in Maycomb by the middle of October. The first major event was Mr. Bob Ewell had received and lost a job in the span of a few days. He was fired from the WPA for laziness, which made him incredibly unique. The welfare woman, Ruth Jones, told Atticus that Mr. Ewell accused Atticus of getting his job. The second event occurred at Judge Taylor’s house on Sunday night when he heard an irritating scratching noise coming from the back of the house. When he went to the back door he found it swinging open. He saw a shadow passing by the house, but that was all. The third event was Mr. Link Deas employed that Tom Robinson’s widow, Helen, although Mr. Link didn’t really need help. Helen walked nearly a mile out of the was to avoid the Ewells, because the first time she tried passing by, “chunked at her.” Mr. Link Deas found out what Helen was doing, and that night walked her home on the public road, passing the Ewell’s house. He threatened to put them in jail, and then went home. The next day nobody “chunked” at Helen but Bob Ewell followed her to work and cursed at her the entire way. Again, Link Deas confronted Mr. Ewell, and threatened to put him in jail. He meant it because Helen never reported of any other trouble on that matter. These major events all helped lead up to a further chapter.
