Chapter 16-20

Ch #16
How do you think Atticus can remain so positive about Mr. Cunningham when he tried to attack him the night before?

Ch #17
If you were the sheriff, would you have called the doctor to check on Mayella? What might have been a reason for the doctor to not have been called?

Ch# 18
Why is the fact that Tom Robinson had a crippled arm so important to Scout?

Ch #19
Mr. Raymond says to Dill "you aren't thin-hided, it just makes you sick doesn't it?" What does this mean in relation to Dill being upset?

Ch #20
At the very end of the chapter Calpurnia walks down the aisle towards Atticus. What do you think could be so important that she would interrupt the trial for?

Ch.17-Yes, if I was the sheriff, I definitely would have called the doctor to check on Mayella. Mr.Ewell probably didn't call for the doctor because he is extremely poor and would'nt have been able to pay the doctor. The Ewell family is also pretty strong. For example, in chapter 18 it says, "...she became what she was, a thick-bodied girl accustomed to strenuous labor."(page 179), so he probably thought Mayella was going to be fine.

Chapter 16: I think that Atticus is a very strong character. I think he has really learned how to be a good human being, and what true strength is. One reason he stayed calm was that he knew the people accusing him of bad didn't know what they were talking about, and Atticus could see that there was still good in them. I also think that for him, setting a good example for his kids is very important, so this is what he is doing as he stays calm.

Emilie,
Atticus is certainly a strong character as well as a father. It is very wise of him to ignore all of the talk going on about him, and to encourage his children to do the same. This is a great lesson for the children to learn! Thanks for responding

Abbey,
I think the sheriff should have called the doctor even if Mr. Ewell didn't want to. It might have helped in Tom's trial, but I don't think it would make a difference.
